Ends and Odds

A feature on Saturday's excellent "From Our Own Correspondent" on BBC Radio 4, was about a the ongoing resonance of Waiting for Godot in troubled parts of the world. Reporting from Syria, Ian Pannell writes:


"Abu Mohammed smiled. 'Hope,' he said. 'I believe Godot is hope.'

Death and destruction had been wrought upon his hometown and we were standing in the ruins of what had been his beloved library, yet his faith was undiminished.

'You know, we are waiting for Godot,' he laughed."
