Ends and Odds

Next month will see a new production of Waiting for Godot staged at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. Directed by Michael Arabian, the play will star James Cromwell, Alan Mandell and Barry McGovern, who will play Pozzo, Estragon and Vladimir, respectively.

"Cromwell actually directed the play when he was in college.

'I had no idea what it was about,' Cromwell said. 'It was a traumatic experience and I think it's the reason I left college.'

Yet, he and 'Godot' soon crossed paths again. In the early 1960s, Cromwell directed a multicultural production that toured Southern states to predominantly African-American audiences. He found that people of all backgrounds and levels of education could get something out of the play."
