Ends and Odds

BBC Radio 4's Great Lives, presented by Matthew Parris, visited Samuel Beckett this week. Beckett is the choice of Sir Gerry Robinson, and he and Parris are expertly guided by Jim Knowlson. You can download the podcast from here.

A little more information has filtered to the Irish Independent on Beckett's refusal to write for RTE in 1961. Beckett wrote:

"I am tres unfamiliar with the television and its possibilities and so hesitate to write for this medium. And if I did I fear the result would be unacceptable in Ireland.
Nevertheless, I am grateful to you for your suggestion and shall keep it in mind. To be agreeable to you personally would give me much pleasure. With best wishes, Yours sincerely, Samuel Beckett".
